A Co Mayo nursing home has won an innovative piece of technology that brings an exceptionally creative, interactive care experience to residents.

St Attracta’s Residence, Charlestown, was a competition winner for a Tovertafel games console, with over 100 entries received from nursing homes across the country. The competition was delivered by Homecare Medical, a national medical supplies company that has its head office in Ballyhaunis, in conjunction with Nursing Homes Ireland. It was run in conjunction with Nursing Homes Week, the national celebration of nursing home care in Ireland.

The Tovertafel is an innovative games console worth €10,000 designed for use in healthcare settings. The console contains a processor, infrared sensors, a loudspeaker, and a high-quality projector from which interactive games are projected onto a table. The console has been developed for people with cognitive challenges and is especially relevant and applicable for people living with Dementia.The games respond to resident’s movements and are proven to have a positive impact on the quality of life of people with cognitive challenges, and they provide lots of fun too.

Trina Donohue, General Manager of St Attracta’s Residence said: “We submitted our application for the Tovertafel without much hope as we knew there would be a lot of entries and were ecstatic to win. Homecare Medical has always been hugely progressive and forward thinking in their product range and the Tovertafel is another example of this.
